Heavy Snow, pastel painting of the first snow of the season

I know I’m probably going to get tired of it sooner than later, but for right now I’m really loving the snow!

Here’s a time-lapse of a pastel painting from this morning’s walk out in the back of our new place.

I’m busy painting a few originals to bring to Laurie Carey & Friends Holiday Artsie Craft Show that’s coming up in just about 10 days. This snowfall came at just the right time for me to make some new winter scenes.

Before I did the larger painting, I did four little studies using a different watercolor underpainting for each one. Then I picked the underpainting I liked best for the final. Here are the little studies, all 2.5 x 4″. Can you tell which study I used as a reference?

Big Dune, pastel painting of a hill at the beach with grass and snow

Last weekend during a break between snow storms my husband and I went out to the state park and walked along the shore for a bit. It was so pretty out there. I love how the beach grass reflects the last light of the day and how the snow peeks out between all the clumps. It’s beautiful here.

Path up the Dune

This is from a wonderful walk along the dunes at the Ludington State Park which is just a half hour from where I live in Michigan. I love to come here in the winter time in the evening when the clouds and the dunes are lit from the low sun. It’s just gorgeous here.

Sun Peeking, pastel painting of the sun through the trees

I love walking in the woods on a winter morning, especially just as the sun is coming through the trees. The sky is all kinds of peach colored and the light looks like stained glass to me. Beautiful!

I love snow fencing. I mean I love how it ribbons back and forth on the beach and I love it especially in the winter with snow all around it and the lake is green and the sky is dark. It all just bodes so beautifully.

This painting is based on a walk down a two-track road in the winter time. There was deep, fresh snow all along the two-track road and a pale blush of peach just over the trees on the horizon. I love walking in the Manistee National Forest with my dogs. It inspires my work.

Sound of Small Waves

Today, while walking the dogs I noticed that the waves from Round Lake were lapping along the shore and it was so beautiful I took a movie of it. And then I painted it, of course. You can’t hear the waves by looking at the painting. Or maybe you can.
