pastel painting of a dog running along a path in the woods

I’m Gonna Run to You

Here’s my daughter Alice and her wife Sandra’s dog, Panda. He’s running through the woods at a park where they like to take him for walks. He’s such a good boy. They have been training him to do “nose” work. That’s where you teach your dog to find things based on the smell. Alice says it’s a lot of fun and it completely wears him out to go to the classes. This is a good thing because Panda is a very energetic doggy. Whenever I visit them Panda knows that he’s going to be asked to run through all the tricks he knows and then there’ll be treats!

pastel painting of a dachshund puppy dog

No. 84, Kippy

I made a few new furry friends over the weekend when Steve and I went to visit his mom. She lives in an assisted living facility in Flint, Michigan. As soon as we arrived we hustled her down to the lobby because there were puppies!

Well, they’re probably grown dogs, but they’re miniature dachshunds so they look tiny and are so much fun to pet and hold! Miss Diana likes to pet them a little but she’s mostly there to spend time with Johanna, her friend. Johanna loves the dogs and she makes a point of coming to see them whenever they visit. She has a particular favorite, Shelby, who sits on her lap like a little queen and allows herself to be petted by no one but Johanna for the entire hour. It’s cute and sweet and makes Johanna so happy.

Kippy, the puppy I painted today, was off being held by someone else. I snuck in a picture of him to paint later and here it is.

Nick and Abby, Warm and Cool

I did these two studies while I was working at the Attic last weekend. I combined two different photos for the reference and then tried it twice, once on warm toned paper and once on a cool toned paper. Which do you like best?

Chester

Chester is my friend Sally’s dog. He’s gone now, but of course, he was the best dog ever. I enjoyed painting him, partly because I got to try out a new kind of pastel paper and partly because he’s a dog! I love dogs.

Thank you, Sally, for sending me Chester’s beautiful face to paint!

No. 15, 30 Friends in 30 Days

Liz and Tomi

Liz is a long time friend that I’ve known since when I started homeschooling Sam and Nick. She is a minister and a dog trainer and story teller and all around creative spirit. She paints small animal meditations every day and posts them on her blog, as well as a hundred other things. This painting of her and her poodle, Tomi, was one of several that she sent for this project, but I liked this one best because each of their faces was half in and half out of the picture plane, making one whole portrait between the two of them.

Number 11, 30 Friends in 30 Days

Mary and Gracie

I’ve known Mary since before we left Ludington, MI to come to Jacksonville, Fl. I remember the first time she came to our house. She sat at the dining room table. She was researching a book she wanted to write about wild mushrooms in Michigan and Steve was helping her. Nick, my youngest, came into the dining room to see who was there. He might have been four years old. I told Mary, “He’s not a big talker,” whereupon she turned to him and asked him a question, I couldn’t even tell you what it was, and it was like the floodgates opened. Whole paragraphs came out of his mouth. It turned out that he had a lot to say, if only someone had expressed an interest in hearing him say it!

Mary is an author, painter and good friend. A couple years ago, she rescued her dog, Gracie, writing a book about her experience. Now they’re inseparable, traveling every winter from Michigan to Florida in an old camper van.

Mary taught me about writing and painting and marketing myself to the world, for which I am forever grateful. Thank you, Mary, for sending me this beautiful selfie of you and your dog to paint!
