pastel painting of a landscape

Spicy

One of the things that Karen Margulis talks about with her landscape paintings is adding “spice” at the end. In this case, I think I over did the spices. But it’s still a pleasing little study. Next time, either pink or turquoise, but not both! It’s likely to lead to indigestion!

Just peachy

Today’s small landscape started with a warm underpainting in red, orange and yellow. It really makes for a lively finish! So different in feeling from yesterday’s painting.

Around the bend

I was watching a Karen Margulis video this morning for inspiration and, huzzah! it worked! I picked out a photo of the Julington Durbin Preserve and did a quick pastel study. So very satisfying. It’s a great way to begin the day. Short, sweet and not nit-picky at all.

This painting is of a bend in the path on the white diamond trail through the preserve. I liked how the trees on the left leaned away from the trail. I also liked the way the bright dry grass peeked out along the horizon line and the way the path reflected the early morning blue of the sky.

This painting is of one of the foot bridges on the red diamond trail which goes to Durbin Creek. I like to walk here with my dogs. It’s probably the most popular trail in the preserve, so they have lots to sniff as we walk along. In this painting I wanted to give a sense of the contrast between the lightening sky and the still dim path earlyin the morning and the tangle of trees and branches overhead.

This painting depicts the Durbin Creek in winter time. The trees are bare, so there is a lot of light filtering down through the branches. Still, the creek is dark from tannins. There are lots of pines in my area, and the needles leach into the water, turning it brown. I think it’s pretty. It sort of looks like dark beer. Mmm, beer.

Today’s painting is about a big ol’ pine tree in the JDP. I love the asymmetrical shape of this tree and especially when it’s silhouetted against a beautiful deep blue sky.

The big pines in the Julington Durbin Preserve are fun to paint because they have these elegant branches that curve down and then swoop back up again and they’re dotted all over with poofs of needles. I heart them.

Today’s painting is about three pines in a field of dried grass and saw palmetto. Saw palmetto is always a riot of colors and spikes, fanning out in a hundred different directions. When you walk through it the leaves make a dry, papery rattling noise. The stems sport sharp teeth, so you have to be careful when handling it.

I like this painting because of the spiky saw palmetto marks and the way the pine tree trunks turned out.

For this painting, I wanted to capture the pretty blue flowers in the foreground, the pale grassy expanse and the clump of saw palmettos on one side. I like the dusty colors of the trees in the background.
