Steve has been working hard to make some tie dye shirts and onesies to sell at our booth, and I will have my skelly and landscape prints, cards and stickers for sale, plus a few originals. It’s happening under the Pavilion on the beautiful Legacy Plaza (right where James Street tees on Ludington Avenue). We hope to see you there!j

Mary, looking at the plein air show in Three Rivers, Michigan

Outing to Carnegie Center for the Arts

I took an opportunity while staying at my daughter’s house to go see “Painting Common Ground,” the plein air landscapes of Erwin Wolff and Richard Jordan, at the Carnegie Center for the Arts in Three Rivers, Michigan.

When you are creating every day it’s good to regularly refill your well of inspiration well. This outing seemed just the ticket, after a few weeks of intense baby care, what with feedings and burpings and changings. It was nice to get out of the house for a few hours.

Richard Jordan is the founder of the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan, a group that I recently joined, so I was curious about what I would see at the show. I’ve only met the Richard and Erwin once or twice and I didn’t have any ideas about what their respective styles might be, except for what I’d glimpsed on their easels in passing.

Once we found the art center my sister and I wandered the halls and floors of the two buildings, one previously used as a library and the other a former bank building. There was a high school/community college show upstairs that we liked very much and also a glassworks show on the main floor. When we asked the director where the plein air show was, she told us Richard and Erwin’s paintings were in the “room with the pianos” on the main level next door.

It was pretty impressive to see so many wonderful plein air paintings in one place! Richard and Erwin have been painting outdoors for many years and it’s reflected in the confidence of their strokes and the compositional clarity of their pieces.

Each artist contributed 25 smaller paintings plus one larger painting to the show, and the works feature natural settings around Michigan, from way up in the UP all the way to the southwest corner of the state. I enjoyed it very much. When I got back to my daughter’s place I also watched a video explaining their individual approaches to their work.

It’s always inspiring to me to see other artists’ works and opens my mind to new ways of seeing the world. I’m very glad I went.

The show continues through April 7, 2022.

Earth Day 2022

I’m going to be creating a landscape painting and live streaming it on Facebook Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 12-3:30pm at the United Methodist Church on Bryant Road in Ludington, Michigan. You will be able to bid on the painting via silent auction at the event. All proceeds from the auction will go to AFFEW (A Few Friends for the Environment of the World). Pretty exciting!

You don’t have to be present to win but you do need to come to the Earth Day event to be able to bid. I will be framing the piece with a gold and black frame at the end of the event and you will be able to take it with you or, if you prefer, I will deliver it to a local address or I can ship it. The winner will be announced at 4pm.

I’m so excited because this is one of the big things I wanted to do this year, using my artwork to do good in the world! I’m so proud to be working alongside AFFEW to help clean up our environment locally and globally.

Below are the reference photos I’ll be practicing for the final painting. Watch my Facebook and Instagram feeds to vote for your favorite reference on April 18, 2022.

Success! Here’s a link to the live demo recording on Facebook and below is my final piece right before I popped it into its frame and it went home with the winner of the silent auction!

Pretty cool!

These are the time-lapses for my study sessions as I finished them. Enjoy!

Frida Skelly with Monkeys ofrenda display for Duncan Woods Park trunk show

Trunk show coming up in October

I and my skellies will be at “A Walk in the Woods,” pop-up art show in Grand Haven on Sunday, October 10, 2021. Rain date is Sunday, October 17.

This is going to be a fun show! I will bring all my skeleton prints, cards and stickers, plus one original (see below) and I hope to see a lot of people coming out to browse the trunks.

Frida Skelly with Monkeys all dressed up for the show!

I spent a morning figuring out how to use my Ford Focus to best advantage for this show. I especially loved making an ofrenda for Frida Skelly using some battery operated candles and lights under the hatchback. I wonder what kind of foods she might like? Bonbons, of course! I plan to add some more things to her altar to make a fitting tribute to her life and work.

Bonus! I will be giving away a Frida Skelly with Monkeys print at the show to some lucky person who fills out an entry for the drawing. I will also be drawing a random name from my subscriber list for the same prize, so keep an eye on your inbox for an announcement of the winners.

The show will go from 1 until 4 pm, and there will be lots of other artists participating, so please come if you can and show your support! Here’s some more info about Duncan Woods Park.

UPDATE

What a great time! I met a lot of new skelly art fans and sold some stuff! Also, congratulations to Kylee on winning the Frida Skelly with Monkeys print that was on display. Check your email Kylee! Plus, if you’re already a subscriber to my email list you may have won the exact same signed print, so look in your inbox for an email from me.

Thanks everyone for supporting me and my art! You’re the best.
